The effect of making a §475 election is that by doing so, a trader is electing to utilize the "Mark-to-Market" method of (MTM) accounting method with regard to his/her securities or commodities positions. MTM is a method of accounting as are the "cash" method and the "accrual" methods with which many people are already familiar. 475(f)(1) of the Internal Revenue Code allows certain taxpayers to use the mark-to-market election as a business, even if they do not maintain an inventory and do not have customers.
