The drilling rigs are complexes of mobile equipment which can be moved (onshore and offshore) from one drill site to another, drilling a series of wells. In rotary drilling the rock is bored using a cutting tool called the bit, which is rotated and simultaneously forced against the rock at the bottom of the hole by a drill string consisting of hollow steel pipes of circular section screwed together. Offshore drilling is the process of extracting petroleum from reserves located beneath the Earth's oceans instead of reserves located on the mainland. Offshore oil rigs have developed greatly over the past years, and have become gigantic structures that house hundreds of people at a time. Offshore drilling has additional constraints of the depth of water, climatic conditions and the remoteness from the logistical base. The main difference between onshore and offshore drilling is related to the way in which the rig is supported. For the most part, offshore drilling requires the same equipment as onshore drilling. A rig, a drillstring with a drillbit at the end, and a turntable are the essential equipment for drilling. Cable tool drilling is usually used for shallow, low pressure formations.
