The World Uncertainty Index is a new measure that tracks uncertainty across the globe by text mining the country reports of the Economist Intelligence Unit. The index is available for 143 countries. Next update. The next update of the index will take place in early April 2020. The update will include 2020Q1 data. We construct a new index of uncertainty — the World Uncertainty Index (WUI) — for 143 individual countries on a quarterly basis from 1996 onwards. This is defined using the frequency of the word “uncertainty” in the quarterly Economist Intelligent Unit country reports. The World Uncertainty Index reveals how uncertainty in the world has evolved over time, whether it is synchronised across countries, and how it compares across income groups and political regimes. In addition, cross-country comparisons reveal that the level of uncertainty varies across countries and is, on average, smaller in advanced economies than in the rest of world. The index is associated with greater economic policy uncertainty (EPU), stock market volatility, risk and lower GDP growth.
